Types of stoma and their complications

What it is

There are two types of stoma and they are told apart by side, by shape and by what is in the bag. An ileostomy is on the right side; it stands up from the skin, because its content carries enzymes and causes irritation around the skin, and the content in the bag is a greenish fluid. A colostomy is on the left side; it is flat to the skin, its content is feces, and it does not cause any irritation of the skin if it touches it directly, and the content in the bag is feces. A stoma also appears outside bowel surgery: an ileal conduit is simple and safe even when renal function is deranged, and it needs an ileostomy bag, whereas a continent pouch and a neobladder are complex surgery and need good renal function to avoid hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis; CIC is a must with a continent pouch, abdominal compression is usually enough to empty a neobladder, and cutaneous ureterostomy and sigmoid ureterostomy are rarely done.
