Hartmann procedure

What it is

The Hartmann procedure is also written as the Hartman procedure with stoma, so the procedure and the stoma go together. Two scenarios are given for when this procedure is indicated: a perforated diverticulum, and obstruction due to malignancy.

An obstructing metastatic sigmoid CA is answered the same way. For a middle-aged lady with abdominal pain and constipation for 8 days, whose abdomen is tender, distended and tympanic with bowel sound ++ and a temperature of 38.6 C, the most appropriate definitive management is the Hartmann procedure, or a diverting ileostomy. It is not NPO, IVF and NG suction, and not anterior resection, and not abdominoperineal resection.
