Colorectal cancer resections by tumour site
What it is
In colon cancer the resection follows the site of the tumor, and the operation of choice is set by where the cancer sits. Three surgeries are named side by side on one page: right hemicolectomy, left hemicolectomy and sigmoid colectomy. Each takes its own named branches:
- Right hemicolectomy: a branch of the middle colic, the right colic and the ileocolic.
- Left hemicolectomy: the inferior mesenteric vein and the inferior mesenteric artery.
- Sigmoid colectomy: the inferior mesenteric artery and the left colic.
