Congenital hypothyroidism newborn screening
What it is
Congenital hypothyroidism is screened for in every newborn, and the rule is plain: every newborn must be screened for hypothyroidism by ordering TSH.
How it presents
The signs are grouped as five Ps: poor brain development; a protuberant tongue, which is macroglossia, along with the anterior fontanelle; a pot belly with constipation; a protruding umbilicus, which is a hernia; and a puffy face.
