Haemodynamic profiles of the four shock types

What it is

Four types of shock are told apart on four things: pre-load, read from the PCWP and the JVP; the pump, read from the CO; after-load, read from the SVR; and perfusion, read from the O2 Sat.

Hypovolemic shock comes from intravascular vol loss, either hemorrhagic or fluid loss. Cardiogenic shock comes from arrhythmia, AMI, valve failure, cardiomyopathy and pericarditis or PE. Distributive shock is vasodilatory, with a very low SVR, and covers septic shock, SIRS, TSS, anaphylaxis, neurogenic shock, drug or toxin, and Addisonian crisis. Obstructive shock comes from tension PTX, tamponade or PE.
