Smoking cessation counselling and pharmacotherapy
Why it is asked so often
Smoking cessation is the one lifestyle step that appears again and again in the management of different diseases, so it is asked for when management is asked for. Where the advice is given in full rather than only named, it reads that smoking cessation programs and adjuncts are recommended.
The places it appears are worth holding together, because the exam asks for the management list and cessation is usually first on it:
- Hypertension: smoking cessation is one of the recommended lifestyle modifications, with alcohol moderation, diet, healthy drinks, physical activity, salt reduction, stress reduction and weight loss
- SLE: treatment opens with smoking cessation and avoidance of UV light, with NSAIDs for symptomatic relief, before pharmacotherapy
- COPD: management is smoking cessation, exercise as pulmonary rehabilitation, vaccination against influenza, pneumococcal and COVID, and then inhalers
- IPF: management is smoking cessation, exercise as pulmonary rehabilitation, the same vaccination, antifibrotic with pirfenidone or nintedanib, and LTOT
- Bronchiectasis: the long-term non-pharmacological plan is smoking cessation, chest physiotherapy and postural drainage exercises, and vaccinations
- Asthma: smoking cessation belongs with elimination of triggers, next to treat symptoms of GERD, domestic irritants and occupation exposures
