Regions and numbering of the vertebral column

What it is

The vertebrae come in named sets: cervical vertebrae C1 to C7, thoracic vertebrae T1 to T12, and lumbar vertebrae L1 to L5, with the sacrum S1 to S5 and then the coccyx. Two of the cervical vertebrae have names of their own: C1 is the atlas and C2 is the axis. The whole is set out in anterior view, right lateral view and posterior view.
