What it is

The cerebral cortex has four lobes: the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe and the temporal lobe. Over the top, the order from front to back is the precentral gyrus, then the central sulcus, then the postcentral gyrus, then the postcentral sulcus, with the superior frontal sulcus ahead of them on each side of the longitudinal fissure, and the lunate sulcus further back. The lateral sulcus lies above the temporal lobe.

Cut open, the same view sets out the corpus callosum, the lateral ventricles, the thalamus and the hypothalamus, and under them the cerebellum with its cerebellar cortex, and the brain stem, whose pons and medulla are named on it.
