Midbrain stroke syndromes (Weber and Benedikt)

What it is

Three named syndromes sit in the midbrain and all three share one thing: an oculomotor nerve palsy on the side of the lesion. Weber syndrome is the medial midbrain syndrome. Benedikt syndrome sits in the tegmentum of the midbrain. Claude syndrome also sits in the midbrain tegmentum. One page puts Benedikt as Weber plus Claude.

Causes and risk

The pages differ on the artery for Weber syndrome: one names the paramedian branches of the posterior cerebral artery, another the paramedian branches of the basilar artery. Benedikt and Claude are both put down to branches of the posterior cerebral artery. A third page gives no artery for each syndrome on its own, and heads Weber, Claude and Benedikt together as posterior cerebral artery stroke.
