Antimicrobial therapy of infective endocarditis

What it is

Treatment is by the organism, and by whether prosthetic material is present. Three sets carry most of it: streptococci susceptible to penicillin, staphylococci as either methicillin-susceptible or methicillin-resistant, and the HACEK microorganisms. Every antibiotic here is IV or IM, and the duration is in weeks for all but the gentamicin added as an optional addition in staphylococcal endocarditis, which runs 3-5 d.
