Ascariasis and common intestinal worms

What it is

Ascaris lumbricoides, the roundworm, is a large roundworm that typically infects the ileum. It is one of the common intestinal parasites, and the ones it has to be told apart from are Enterobius vermicularis, the pinworm, Necator americanus, the hookworm, Taenia solium, the tapeworm, and Giardia lamblia.

How it comes to the office

The case put on it is a child brought in after passing an intestinal worm, and the worm itself is the whole of the finding: a 5-year-old male is brought in after passing an intestinal worm, lives on a farm with cattle, pigs and dogs, has never traveled very far from home, has no respiratory symptoms and no diarrhea, but has experienced some abdominal bloating. A picture of the worm taken by his mother is what the answer rests on.

So the history does not tell you the infecting organism here. The worm is known by its appearance.
