Dermoid cyst of the neck
What it is
A dermoid cyst of the neck is one of the congenital neck masses. In the differential diagnosis of neck masses the congenital group holds branchial cleft cyst, dermoid cyst, thyroglossal duct cyst, laryngocele and ectopic thyroid tissue. Dermoid cysts themselves are due to entrapment of epithelium in deeper tissue.
How it presents
It is a slow growing, midline, non-tender, mobile, submental neck mass. It is painless, and it does not move with swallowing or with tongue protrusion.
How it is diagnosed
US is the imaging used.
