Basal-bolus insulin regimen and dose adjustment

What it is

The basal-bolus regimen is considered the best for the day-to-day management of diabetes: a long acting basal insulin at night with rapid insulin at meals. It is similar to physiological insulin, which exists at a baseline level with insulin spikes after a meal. Insulin therapy for people with type 1 diabetes should be based on basal and bolus insulin therapy called Multiple Daily Injections, or on basal plus bolus insulin based on the Insulin Carbohydrate Ratio, or on insulin pump therapy.
